Principal's Message

Here at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, (MLK) academy, we emphasize academic and social success for all students.

Student academic progress is at the forefront of our instructional program as we aim for excellence in mathematics, science, and language arts. Just as important, we demand and expect high social standards in student behavior, teamwork, and preparation for higher education. Our energetic and enthusiastic faculty believe that excellence begin with genuine collaborative efforts, and so teachers make it their goal to grow in their practice and support each other as they seek, learn, and implement new strategies and methodologies to develop and foster creativity and higher-level thinking skills in their students.

MLK employs the services of dedicated and talented individuals whose efforts augment the students’ success. Our full-time Nutrition Network teacher and physical education instructor were instrumental in making our school the reigning Central Coast regional champion of the 2007 Governor’s Fitness Challenge. We have the added benefit of having a full-time Outreach Coordinator through whom we are able to reach out to our families and help insure our students’ physical and mental well-being. In addition to the above services, we offer rigorous before and after school programs, which are designed to effectively target and meet the diverse needs of our students. MLK is proud to provide educational services in a safe, state of the art, and handsome environment.

Our new building houses a science lab; we have beautifully landscaped grounds, and our staff and students enjoy the use of our award-winning garden. To assist our teachers in integrating technology throughout the curriculum, all our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, including wireless internet, LCD projectors, Document Cameras (ELMOs), and televisions with VHS and DVD capabilities. We also have our own intra-school television station. We are fortunate to have a full-time computer technician who maintains all our technologies. At MLK, our faculty work hard to promote our vision of success and excellence as each and every teacher continues to inspire our students to work hard and be self motivated so that they can make a positive difference in their lives, their community, and their future. MLK is definitely a wonderful and nurturing place to work and go to school!
